Ta-Hua Hu (1938-) is a "nail painting" artist who uses nails to nail recycled steel and aluminum cans onto wooden boards.
He has never received any formal training, but in his early years in the hardware trade, he often saw scraps metal and felt very regretful. After retiring at the age of 60, he started to use these metal wastes as materials and has been creating works for more than 20 years, later adding wire, buttons, fabrics and other composite materials to his works.
The process of creation starts with collecting aluminum cans, sorting the recycled cans by color, then sketching on wooden boards, dismantling and cutting the cans with tin scissors, and finally nailing the aluminum pieces to the wooden boards with nails; each work takes more than a month to finish, which is why Hu has called his works Metal Mosaic Paintings.
The theme of his topic has long been the scenery and cultural landscape of his hometown, Jiufen, and if the aluminum cans have the printed word of "Taiwan", Hu will especially to keep it and pin it to his paintings to make it easier for foreigners to understand his works.
This time, Hu selected five works related to Kaohsiung's harbor scenery, industrial area and city imagery for the exhibition.
